Choose buildings visitors can recognize
Do not copy every internal department into the map. Build destinations around reasons people visit:

Give every building an operating contract
Write a short contract for each building: audience, visitor purposes, host roles, minimum context, and fallback process. “Supplier and procurement” can route a delivery conversation; it should not imply purchase approval or a contract decision. “Plant visitors” can orient someone to the human contact; it should not grant site access, bypass safety requirements, or promise a tour.
Use bounded intake. Ask for name, organization, product, plant or order context, purpose, and concise summary. Do not request passwords, credentials, confidential drawings, customer records, safety documents, or proprietary specifications in a general reception. For safety, security, legal, privacy, or urgent plant matters, direct visitors to the approved human or secure process.
Route within and between buildings
The campus should let a visitor move from broad intent to the right role without repeating the opening story. A supplier can start at Welcome center, choose Supplier and procurement, and share a delivery context. A customer can choose Customer and product support. A plant visitor can choose Site visitor and receive a human route.
If the first role is unavailable, place the inquiry in its response queue or route to a documented general role. Preserve identity, organization, plant, purpose, and summary when ownership changes. The host can continue in chat or choose browser phone, video, screen sharing, or a private room. The channel supports a conversation; it does not determine safety approval, technical resolution, or contract terms.
Presence states can show whether a role is available, in a conversation, or away. Describe availability narrowly. “Available for supplier questions” is not “available for a plant incident.” If no host is present, show an honest message and queue rule. Do not use presence to imply production uptime, safety, recovery, security, response time, or SLA adherence.
Separate public, site, and private spaces
Manufacturers often need a boundary between customers, suppliers, and plant teams. A campus can show broad areas such as Customer support, Supplier coordination, and Site visitors without exposing control-room names, shift schedules, personal phone numbers, restricted drawings, or incident rooms. Ask for site or order context during intake and route to the appropriate human role.
Keep safety, security, and urgent plant procedures authoritative in the systems the manufacturer maintains. A virtual campus is not a live equipment status page or emergency channel. A private Kiguri room is a conversation destination, not proof of confidentiality, security, safety, or regulatory compliance.
Launch with a small planning model
Start with a welcome center and two or three buildings with clear owners. Test a journey for a customer, supplier, plant visitor, distributor, candidate, and after-hours visitor. Ask what each person expected after selecting a building. If a visitor expected a diagnosis, site authorization, safety decision, or guaranteed delivery, revise the wording.
Keep a campus register with building name, audience, purpose labels, host roles, queue owner, approved answers, public placements, and review date. When a plant changes ownership or a product group reorganizes, update the register and map together. Retire buildings without owners instead of leaving an attractive but unstaffed destination.
Review sample handoffs with operations staff. Did the visitor choose the right building? Did the host receive enough context without proprietary data? Did a map expose a restricted room? Use observations to simplify labels and update approved answers. Internal routing counts can inform planning, but they do not prove manufacturing performance, safety, security, privacy, compliance, or commercial outcomes.
Assign ownership moments
Name an owner for the public reception, an owner for unclaimed queue items, a conversation owner for each building, and a boundary owner for approved answers. These responsibilities can rotate, but they should never be implied. Without a queue owner, a supplier may receive an acknowledgment without follow-up. Without a boundary owner, an old plant or safety message can remain visible after operations change.
Make after-hours behavior explicit. If a visitor can leave context in the queue, explain who reviews it and when. If the reception is not monitored outside stated hours, say so. Keep urgent safety and plant procedures in the manufacturer's established channel rather than treating a virtual campus as an incident desk.
Review the register after a site change, product launch, or supplier rotation. A small, current map is easier for visitors than a directory that mirrors every internal manufacturing team.

Example: a supplier-day route
A supplier opens the branded link, selects Supplier and procurement, names the plant and delivery purpose, and reaches the supplier-relations role. If that host is away, the queue message explains when the procurement team reviews the inquiry. The public map never needs to expose the receiving dock, shift schedule, or private supplier room.

Is a multi-building campus a plant map or control system?
No. It is a visitor-facing orientation and human-routing model. Keep plant topology, equipment status, safety procedures, and operational records in the manufacturer's own systems.
